He was inspired to write this book by his studies in music (BA and MM) at Northwestern University and continued studies in medieval philosophy (Loyola University of Chicago), as well as and ideas and methods (University of Chicago) prompted his curiosity on how the studies of philosophy and music interrelate. We learn the ideas and methods of many social cultures and our own chosen specialty, but we often neglect the liberal art of disciplining and enjoying the ideas and methods of our own individuality. This book offers a path toward the education of privacy. The key words here are selection, design, and beauty. This is a non-fiction book that interrelates five areas of general human interest, those of spirituality, philosophy, science, art, and body awareness. The interrelation is accomplished by using personal patterns of experience that are available from philosophy and music, to personally design the other areas of human interest that are usually treated in terms of their ideas and methods in a more impersonal manner. In this way, all areas of human interest can be integral to personal perspective without destroying the integrity of these other enterprises. Because of the plurality of subject matters and methods used in philosophy and music, their patterns of discipline are comparable to self-discipline. This book attempts to create a path in this direction. Besides the enjoyment of social culture and personal skills, there is the enjoyment of being yourself. This is a neglected liberal art.
